It was a easy trip, though long, with out any changing of movies in the car, anyone needing a snack, other than us, or having to referee any arguments. Again, other than us. (Just kidding) We got down there Wednesday night around 10:00 and quickly checked in. We quickly started to melt in the hot, humid weather of the coast as opposed to the dry and cool mountain air that we had become accustomed to. Thank goodness for air conditioner!
Thursday we got up early and headed to St. Simon's Island. We enjoyed riding around and seeing how much it had changed since our last visit. After an early lunch, we headed back to Jekyll Island so Steve could attend the Gubernatorial debates. I lounged by the pool and enjoyed the quiet. We then got cleaned up and headed back to St. Simon's for dinner. No chicken fingers allowed! It was delicious.
Friday Steve played golf while I met up with my brother Daniel and hit the beach. After lunch, I left Daniel to return to Darien and then I went back to the pool. After taking all the hot sun I could take, I retreated back to the cool hotel room and got ready for the GPA awards dinner.
This is what we had been waiting for. They held the dinner and reception in the Jekyll Island Conference center, which is being torn down to make way for progress. Twenty one awards (9 of them being First Place) and 3 hours later, The Clayton Tribune was named the Best Newspaper in Georgia in its classification. This is the fifth year in the past seven that this has been the case. I am so proud of Steve and the staff of all their hard work. I know how much thought, time, and sweat goes into each issue.
Until next time,
there's no place like home.
